BIO

Noam Shapiro is a New York-based director and dramaturg of new plays. He creates theater that explores how we respond during moments of crisis or change. 

Noam is the Producing Artistic Director of Three Hares, a company that brings together diverse artists to create socially conscious and political theater.

He is a Manhattan Theatre Club Directing Fellow, an alum of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab, a finalist for Opera America’s Robert L.B. Tobin Director-Designer Showcase, a Drama League Artist-in-Residence, a Resident Artist at Access Theater, a Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation Directing Observer, a Co-Founder of Lyra Theater, and an alum of the 24 Hour Plays: Nationals. 

Recently, Noam has developed work with Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Drama League, The LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, Fresh Ground Pepper, The Barrow Group, New Dramatists, The Lark, The Brick, The Tank, The League of Independent Theater, and #Serials at the Flea Theatre. He has directed or taught at a number of educational institutions, including Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University, and Hunter College.

Noam has also enjoyed assisting directors at The New Group, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Keen Company, The Pearl Theatre, Transport Group, and the Cape Cod Theatre Project, and observing directors at Theatre for a New Audience, SoHo Rep, and Elevator Repair Service.

Noam's directing has appeared in features about political theater in The New York Times, The Atlantic, TDF Stages, The Times of Israel, and The Johns Hopkins Hub, and his productions of Cabaret and The Crucible were selected for Playbill.com’s list of “Innovative College Productions” from 2014-2015. 

Noam holds a B.A. from Yale University in Theater Studies and History, where he studied with Donald Margulies, Deb Margolin, Marc Robinson, Paul Walsh, Dan Egan, Toni Dorfman, and Hamilton historian Joanne Freeman.

He is also an educator, specializing in writing skills and college applications.
